The name ‘Namib’ translates as “vast place”, which is apt given that Namibia is one of the least crowded destinations on the planet and it is possible to discover enormous open spaces without roads, towns, trees or even stones, just the lonely desert wind passing through one of the most enchanting corners of the earth.
Africa’s largest game park, the Namib-Naukluft Park with its magnificent sea of rolling red dunes at Sossusvlei is best viewed from a hot air balloon whilst Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s great parks in both size and diversity of wildlife. In the country’s far north eastern pocket is the captivating and largely unexplored Caprivi Strip.
The Skeleton coast which stretches for 100’s of kilometers is littered with ship wrecks, large colonies of seals, and animals adapted to the desert, that scavenge along the shore line.
Mining towns, now deserted, have been taken over by the rolling sand dunes and are a favourite subject for photographers. The Fish River canyon, the 2nd largest in the world, bisects the southern section of the country and boasts dramatic scenery.
Golden dunes in every shade meet the ocean in ever-shifting shapes and patterns, and Flamingos and Pelicans take shelter in the Walvis Bay Lagoon. Wildlife has adapted to this harsh environment and wanders through this incredible landscape.
A strong German influence can be seen in the architecture and food whilst a number of tribes retain their distinctive heritage. It is the perfect destination for those who love open spaces, incredible scenery, culture and diverse wildlife.
