Zambia – the heart of Southern Africa. With more than 33% of the country dedicated to game reserves and protected areas, Zambia offers some of the best game viewing in Africa. From wetlands to sweeping plains to teak forests, huge lakes, waterfalls and meandering rivers, each area is unique and captivating. For “twitchers”, photographers, adventure seekers and wild life enthusiasts – Zambia is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. Imagine sun downers on the banks of the mighty Zambezi, walking in Luangwa or watching one of the largest mammal migrations on earth in Kasanka National Park.
Teeming with wildlife and an incredible diversity of bird-life, South Luangwa National Park is a destination of choice for wildlife enthusiasts. It is where walking safaris were pioneered by the late Norman Carr in the 1950’s and today it is still one of the best ways to experience Africa’s pristine wilderness first-hand.
Leopard, Lion, Hyaena and the highly endangered Wild Dog can all be seen as well as a myriad of other mammals. Sadly Rhino have been poached out. Carmine bee-eaters arrive in their hundreds from August/September onward and the sandy cliffs are transformed into a tapestry of vibrant colour as they nest and raise their young.
Accommodation in and around the park varies from rustic campsites to luxury lodges. Some areas are only accessible during the drier months from May to late October. Those that are open during the “secret season” offer good value for money and it is the best time for birders.
Kafue is the oldest and largest national park in Zambia. Vast plains, swamps, rivers and forests create distinct areas which each offer different vistas and game viewing experiences. The park can be accessed by air from Lusaka or Livingstone or by road depending on time of year. Kafue offers visitors a truly “wild” experience in that it is one of the least visited parks in Zambia.
In the far north of the reserve you will find Shumba Camp which is situated on a tree island right in the middle of the superbly flat Busanga Plains. Floodplain grasses stretch to the horizon, interrupted only by isolated protrusion of fig and palm trees. The wealth of game in the area is a big attraction for predators, including wild dog, cheetah and prides of lion. For game viewing from a different perspective, take to the skies in a Hot air balloon.
Livingstone, named after the famous explorer, Dr David Livingstone, is the access point to Victoria Falls. Luxury hotels and back packer lodges are nestled along the river and in the surrounding area. Travel back in time on the Livingstone express or for a unique view of the falls, helicopter and micro light flights are on offer. Walk with Cheetah or ride an Elephant, cruise the river in a canoe or brave the rapids through Batoka Gorge, look out for the magical lunar rainbows over the Falls or browse the local markets – whatever you choose, Zambia will imprint itself upon your heart.
